Toddlers are the boss, in photography sessions. What’s funny about them is that, if I look at it right, they are the perfect client. Real emotion, passion, and communication is the only thing they have to offer. The trick is to catch it. I think I’ve found that there’s a good chance to catch winning photos no matter what the mood, I just have to be ready to roll with what they think is fun. If he’s happy sitting and playing with cars, it’s a bonus and I can settle in to catch all perspectives of photos, while he’s happily entertained. This is the case below, giving me enough photos in five minutes time to show how he’s in love with his cars, always holding them with his hands and arranging them in order.
Other times toddler’s are all about running. It’s a bit more of a workout to keep up with them, but smiles are always the result when I finally catch up to them. I think the key is to not keep forcing them to do something they don’t want to do. Outsmarting them works even better, usually by doing the new activity and showing them how much fun you’re having. This is the peptalk I always give myself before a toddler shoot. 🙂
